The introduction and conclusion have the same features as the rest of the essays. With the introduction made up of the essay hook, background information, the thesis statement, and the thesis roadmap. The conclusion will restate the thesis while reiterating the main points of the body paragraph.

The body paragraph is where the essay structure varies from one type of argumentative essay to the other. The most important components of the argumentative body paragraph are a variation of the following: your claim, the background information, the evidence, the counter-argument, the rebuttal, and connection to the main thesis.

Types of Argumentative Methods

There are three main argumentative methods, dating as back as early as the Aristotelian era to the recent century. Each method has its own merits and its own purpose, but they all have their end in the mindset to convince the reader about your argument.

Toulmin Method

The Toulmin Method will present the claim or the argument first, it then will follow steps to convince the reader about its validity.

Claim

The claim will be mentioned first and foremost

Supporting evidence

One or many evidence and examples backing your claim will be mentioned here.

Warrant

Connecting the claim back to the thesis.

Counter

The counters to the claim should be stated and discussed here.

Rebuttal

You will show how your claim is the right logical answer to the argument.

Rogerian Method

Using this method will not put your claim at the center. It will instead place the logic of arguments at the center and place both your claim and the counterclaims side by side. Here the essay writer is being emphatic to the opinions of others. Such that the counters are foremost discussed, and even at the conclusion of the method you will compare one method with the other, to convince the reader of the validity of your claim. The different parts of this method are:

Introducing the issue

You will give an introduction to the issue at hand, maybe a bit of background too.

Counterclaim

The counter to your claim will be mentioned here.

Meriting the counters

How the counter-arguments are fare against your reasoning.

Stating your position

After going through the counterpoints, you will finally mention your claim.

Evidence

The evidence and examples that show the validity of your claim should be presented strongest first.

Evaluating the options

You will discuss the various claims in parallel without deeming any invalid, and trying to find a middle ground to the argument.

Classical Method

The classical method is a purely deductive method that will employ the Aristotelian method of Ethos, Logos, and Pathos to the max. It will start from the general to the specific.

The claim

The claim comes at the start of the paragraph, maybe in the form of the topic sentence.

Evidence

The evidence and examples will follow the claim.

Counterclaim

The counter-argument to the claim will be stated and discussed without being partial.

Rebuttal

The rebuttal is where you will show how your claim stands out in its logic and reasoning amongst the rest.
